Conditions We Treat
Sciatica Relief Starts With Understanding the Cause
Sciatica can feel like a sharp, burning, or electric pain that travels from the low back or hip into the leg. Because the same symptom can have more than one cause, care at Knight Family Chiropractic begins with a thorough evaluation—not a one-size-fits-all plan.
Schedule a Sciatica EvaluationWhat Is Sciatica?
Sciatica describes symptoms caused by irritation or pressure involving the sciatic nerve. The discomfort may begin in the low back, buttock, or hip and travel down the back or side of one leg.
Common causes can include a herniated or bulging disc, narrowing around the nerve, joint restriction, muscle tension, or a combination of factors. Finding the likely source helps us determine whether conservative chiropractic care is appropriate for you.
Common Signs of Sciatica
- Pain that travels from the low back or buttock into one leg
- Burning, tingling, or an “electric” sensation
- Numbness in the leg or foot
- Symptoms that worsen with sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing
- Leg weakness or difficulty with certain movements
How We Evaluate Sciatica
Your first visit includes a conversation about when the symptoms began, where they travel, what makes them better or worse, and how they affect your daily life. We then perform an orthopedic and neurological examination focused on the low back, hips, pelvis, and lower extremities.
Imaging is not automatically required. If your examination or history suggests that X-rays, MRI, or referral to another provider is appropriate, we will explain why and help you understand the next step.
A Care Plan Built Around You
When conservative care is appropriate, your plan may include chiropractic adjustments, non-surgical decompression, soft tissue care, rehabilitation exercises, and practical guidance for movement, posture, work, or sleep. The exact combination depends on what we find during your evaluation.
Our goal is to reduce irritation, improve motion, help you return to normal activity, and give you a clear understanding of your condition. We will also tell you when your symptoms are better served by co-management or referral.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a chiropractor help with sciatica?
Chiropractic care may help when sciatica is related to mechanical joint restriction, disc irritation, or muscular factors. An evaluation is needed to identify the likely cause and rule out signs that require a different level of care.
How long does sciatica take to improve?
Recovery time varies with the cause, severity, duration of symptoms, and your overall health. After your examination, we can provide a more realistic expectation and monitor your response to care.
Should I keep moving with sciatica?
Complete bed rest is rarely helpful. Gentle movement is often encouraged, but activities that clearly increase leg pain, numbness, or weakness should be modified until you are evaluated.
Will I need X-rays or an MRI?
Not everyone needs imaging. We recommend it only when your history, examination, or response to care suggests it will meaningfully guide treatment or referral.
